MiX Telematics and Heartbeat announce official opening of new community development centre in Vosloorus
“MiX Telematics has been involved with Heartbeat since 2009. Over the past few years, we’ve had the vision to really make a difference in the lives of the children by upgrading and developing the Centre,” says Gert Pretorius, Managing Director of MiX Telematics (Africa Fleet Solutions). “Today, it is with great pride that we come together for its official opening.”
“We’re extremely grateful to MiX Telematics for their generous investment. Without their assistance and commitment to Heartbeat, our dream of developing the youth would not have become a reality,” says Professor Sunette Pienaar, Founder and Executive Chairperson of Heartbeat.
“MiX Telematics has been an active supporter of Heartbeat for nearly five years. They supported our holiday and youth development programmes and also assisted with the establishment of a food garden for the Centre. Their staff regularly take a hands-on approach and engage in activities that need to be done,” adds Pienaar.
The MiX Telematics Enterprise Trust is underpinned by three key elements: growth, development and mentoring. “The decision to invest in the new facility aligned perfectly with our goals and we’re committed to ensuring that the improvements are sustainable,” says Bathandwa Mcuba, Chairperson of the MiX Telematics Enterprise Trust.
“We have identified the need to develop youth leadership in the country. Our programmes for youth development are targeted specifically towards vulnerable children,” says Pienaar.
From the onset, it was agreed that the children would be 100 percent involved in the design and progress of the new Centre. A number of sessions were held to get input from the children and hear about what inspires them. The outcome of these sessions was then incorporated into the design and layout of the Centre.

About the MiX Telematics Enterprise Trust
The MiX Telematics Enterprise Trust was established in 2009 as part of MiX Telematics’ commitment to be a responsible corporate citizen. MiX Telematics is serious about its contribution to the development and transformation of South Africa and the Trust is a perfect vehicle to make this a reality. Funding for the Trust is made available through dividends from MiX Telematics and the primary societal groups aided by the Trust are underprivileged women and children. The Trust focuses on carefully selected initiatives, all of which are aimed at improving the lives of the communities in which the company operates. It encourages and supports growth through education and skills development as well as through mentoring on an individual basis.
Heartbeat was founded in 2000 by Professor Sunette Pienaar in response to the massive orphan challenges found in South Africa. The organisation carries the interest of the child at heart and strives to provide opportunities and support to realise a brighter future for our communities through our youth. To date Heartbeat has supported more than 55 000 orphans and vulnerable children, either through our community based interventions or through mentoring and training.
In consideration of the constantly shifting development landscape, the demand for supporting young leaders and the ever increasing financial pressures experienced by the sector as a whole, Heartbeat evolved its model of intervention to ensure that the organisation continues to achieve the greatest possible sustainable impact in our communities. In keeping with this recognised need for adaptation and evolution, Heartbeat has developed a new strategy for the organisation from 2014 going forward focusing on leadership development, training and mentoring. This strategy is aligned to Heartbeat’s vision, its track record of success in specific focus areas, national developmental imperatives, the challenging donor environment and sustainability of the organisation and its interventions.
