In-cab cameras friend or foe?

There has been much discussion regarding whether in-cab cameras are a benefit or a burden in protecting drivers on the road.

However, the use of in-cab technology within truck fleets is increasing as the benefits of greater safety and security become apparent.

The cameras can be forward facing, rear facing (towards the driver) or both. They work by recording rolling video footage and capture specific events by way of short videos.

Typically, drivers are resistant to having in-cab cameras fitted into their vehicles as it can pose privacy concerns but used correctly in-cab cameras are an invaluable resource particularly in the event of an accident where they can be used to absolve drivers of any fault or blame. Truck drivers tend to be blamed when crashes occur on the road when in fact 80% of crashes involving truck drivers are caused by other vehicles*. By having an in-can camera installed, drivers are protected against false accident claims.

In-cab cameras can also deliver improvements in safety and driver training. Drivers tend to be more vigilant when they know that their every move is being captured on camera and even though privacy issues exist, the reality is that only footage where an event or incident has been captured is reported and shared with managers or superiors.
