Using telematics and driver training to tailor fuel efficiency

Using telematics and driver training to tailor fuel efficiency

All fleets can benefit from investing in telematics and driver training to improve their fuel efficiency.

Central to sustainable fleet management is the principle that 'you can't manage what you don't measure'. Relevant and accurate data is key for any fuel efficient fleet and can be used to monitor progress and set future goals. Telematics can be fundamental to providing the precise data that is needed to make a continual and sustainable fuel efficiency improvement.

There is a cyclical, yet simple, six-step plan that fleets can follow if they want to improve their fuel efficiency via telematics and driver training.

Step 1 - Assess current performance

Fleets need to gain a thorough understanding of their existing fuel usage and other operating costs. This will help them to set targets and give them a barometer to which they can track their overall progress and that of their individual drivers.

Any fuel usage data will be helpful at this stage, but total fuel spend and current fleet efficiency totals are crucial. As well as identifying their current fuel use, fleets can also assess their existing fleet policies.

Step 2 - Define business needs

Even for fleets, transport is usually considered as a derived demand - one that is driven by the need to fulfil other objectives such as delivering goods or staff.

Fuel efficiency is an effective way to make savings as it has few drawbacks on other areas of the business. For example, a more fuel efficient fleet is unlikely to miss delivery deadlines as a result of its changes.

However, some operational changes such as ensuring vehicles are appropriately specified for typical loads can offer advantages that are distinct from those instigated via telematics and driver training. Likewise, fleets can check outdated policies such as mileage thresholds are not harming a fuel efficiency drive.

Step 3 - Identify opportunities for improvement

Having collected information on current fuel usage and analysed any inefficient areas of operation, the fleet manager needs to look at how drivers can improve their fuel efficiency.

If telematics were used in the initial data gathering process, inefficient driver techniques may already be highlighted. Harsh braking and accelerating, for example, can often use much more fuel than a smoother journey - especially when larger vehicles with heavy loads are being used.

Step 4 - Engage drivers and staff

Driver training is an integral aspect of boosting fuel efficiency. Not only will education help drivers understand and fulfil the targets set by the telematics data, driver training can help alter the drivers' mindset so that they become more sustainable in everything they do.

Very often, once a visible fuel efficiency scheme is in place and employees become aware that fuel use is being monitored, improvements can be seen within days.

Step 5 - Implementation

Only after telematics data has identified limitations that are then corrected through driver training, will a fleet start to see improvements in its fuel efficiency.

Implementation should be thorough and carried out once telematics and other fuel usage monitoring systems are ready to record the changes in driving technique and total fuel usage. Incorporating changes before this stage could skew results and harm the long-term potential and cyclical nature of the fuel efficiency scheme.

Step 6 - Ongoing monitoring and continual progress

Once all steps have been taken, continual fuel efficiency is derived from tweaking the process. Telematics data can help identify areas in driving technique that can be further improved and the driver training can be adjusted accordingly. By monitoring as much data as possible and acting on it, fleets can take a holistic review of everything they do and continue to lower their fuel speed and increase their mpgs.
